• Participation of Republican exiles (The Nine or Division Leclerc)

The name "The Nine" was popularly assigned to 9. ª Company 2. Armored Division of the Free French, (this also known as the Leclerc Division). This was a pretty remarkable to be formed almost entirely by Republicans about 150 Spaniards under French command, although the Leclerc Division were also enrolled and other soldiers scattered in various companies Spanish origin company.

Republicans veterans of the civil war that had been exiled in Europe, also fought the Nazis. Mainly in the defense of the Netherlands, as fighters or Free French armored divisions as The Nine, which was the first troops to enter the city in the Liberation of Paris. Even a Spanish unit participated in the Normandy landings (Spanish Company number one).

Meanwhile, Republicans who were exiled in the USSR fought in the ranks of the Red Army on the Eastern Front. As some refused to fight, the paradox that agreed gulags and Soviet prisons with members of the Blue Division who had been taken prisoner was given.

Poemas del destierro y de la espera
Hoy las nubes me trajeron,
volando, el mapa de España.
(...) Yo, a caballo, por su sombra
busqué mi pueblo y mi casa.
Entré en el patio que un día
fuera una fuente con agua.
Aunque no estaba la fuente,
la fuente siempre sonaba.
Y el agua que no corría
volvió para darme agua.
